Thanksgiving Day Delights at Disneyland’s Blue Bayou

When eating at any Disney park, choosing where you want to eat can be a daunting task. At least at Disneyland there are far fewer options that her sister parks at Disney World.

So when our family decided we were going to be spending Thanksgiving at Disneyland, we began making plan on where we wanted to eat as soon as possible. At Disneyland, you can only reserve your dining reservations 60 days out, unlike Disney World, where you have to make a plan 180 days out.

On top of select dining locations, when it comes to restaurants that serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal, the options become slimmer. Some immediately get crossed off the list at their $75+ per person price point. Others just did not seem to appealing.

One place we have dined before, and ultimately elected to go with again was Blue Bayou. Located in the New Orleans Square district of the park, Blue Bayou is one of the most unique restaurants in Disneyland since it is located inside of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

As you enjoy your meal, guests looking to go on a pirate adventure slowly float by in their boats to look for Pirate Jack Sparrow. Dining at Blue Bayou is quite the experience in such a historic attraction, and that is before the meal is even served.

While the regular menu was available, we elected to order the Thanksgiving day special, which consisted of turkey roulade, truffle-infused chicken giblet stuffing, roasted garlic Boursin mashed potatoes and veggies. Meals were also served with a side salad.

Like most any food at Disney, the meal was nicely presented and really good.

The boys went with their standard mac and cheese dish, which was served with a side of brocollini and grapes.

The ambiance, the company, the nostalgia. It was all there while dining at Blue Bayou on Thanksgiving.

Cleveland’s Own Fabulous Food Show Review

Starting today through Sunday, one of Cleveland hidden gems is going on at the IX Center adjacent to the airport, the Fabulous Food Show. Our family was invited out to experience the show, and we elected to have my in-laws go in our place. My father-in-laws writes about their camping and travel adventures for Why Did We Wait So Long, and always has an interesting perspective on things that I think our readers will enjoy.

Fabulous Food Show Review

Want to sample some great flavors to add to your favorite dish, or try some new food looking to break into the Cleveland market? Then the Fabulous Food Show is for you. With four cooking demonstration stages, a beer and wine tasting area, and over 150 vendors selling all kinds of interesting food products, there is something to suit everyone’s taste.

Where else can one sample the cuisine from one of 10 regional food trucks in the warmth of the IX center while Cleveland suffers through the first winter snow advisory of the season?

The highlights of sampling were Dads Favorite Cheese spreads from Kentucky, RJs Peppers in Oil From Youngstown, Miss Lillian’s Sauce from Maryland, and Chef Williams Concord Sloppy Joe Sauce. Considering they were a personal highlight, they were worthy of being brought home for further sampling.

It also felt good to sit with a Cleveland Legend, Mr. Michael Symon. Sitting in the audience of the food show’s main stage was probably the highlight of the event. With his local restaurants (Lola, Lolita, Bar Symon, and B Spot), his Iron Chef credentials, and being one of the hosts of ABC’s The Chew, Mr. Symon brought a hometown flavor to the Fabulous Food Show. Michael blended his humor along with the eggs he taught us to cook.

One of the things I truly appreciated about this show was that everything there related to cooking and food. Most other shows at the IX center include aisles of Gutter Guards and Sham Wows to wade through.

With hundreds of samples to try at the Fabulous Food Show, one should come hungry and not expect to leave with an empty stomach. The Fabulous Food Show is held November 14-16, 2014. Kids 12 and under are free, with ticket varying in price depending on what featured celebrity chefs you would like to see perform.

Review: Max’s Allegheny Tavern (Pittsburgh, PA)

For the past couple of years, one of the most surprising things I have experienced from travel and blogging is that for as many times we have visited the city of Pittsburgh, we have never written about our favorite German restaurant in the city, Max’s Allegheny Tavern.

Many years ago my wife and I stumbled upon Max’s by accident, through one of my wife’s TripAdvisor searches. The genuine and amazing German food has caused us to go out of our way on several road trips, purposely stopping to grab a bite to eat.

So when our family knew we were going to be visiting Pittsburgh’s Children Museum, we made sure to save plenty of room in our bellies for Max’s.

Being a big schnitzel fan, I elected to go with the daily special of a schnitzel sandwich on pretzel bun served with a choice of side, which I elected to get spätzle. The sandwich was superb, though it did have a little too much onion.

The boys elected to get a fish sandwich and cheeseburger, both of which were served with excellent fresh cut fries and freshly prepared applesauce!

My wife chose to eat Schnitzel Royale, which she said was great!

After our food was served, an adjacent table was served with rounds of chicken wings, which they said came highly recommended. So we ordered a set of the honey wings. They were huge and very good!

The restaurant has old school character and tried and true old world recipes that make us keep returning for more of their family friendly atmosphere.
