Review: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Yak & Yeti

DISNEY’S YAK & YETI – During my wife and my honeymoon back in 2008, we went to Disney World, and during our inaugural visit to the Animal Kingdom theme park, we dined at Yak & Yeti. This sit down restaurant features pan-Asian Nepalese-style cuisine, and I vaguely remember not being entirely impressed, though not disappointed, in the experience. Overall, we really never thought we would ever return to Yak & Yeti again.

It was also during a recent visit by my brother-in-law that he elected to try the Duck with Anandapur Glaze, and he fell in love. Fate had it that we were then destined to return to Yak & Yeti when we all visited together this past June for my father-in-laws 60th birthday.

During this recent visit to Yak & Yeti, I was off with one of our children, so my wife ordered the food for us to share.

First up was the Lettuce Cups for Two (Minced chicken breast, chopped vegetables, Saigon Haison sauce, crisp lettuce cups) for $13.99.

In addition, we shared an order of Crispy Honey Chicken (Tempura chicken, broccoli, carrots, honey sauce and choice of jasmine or brown rice) for $17.99.

From what I recall, I do not think I had ever eaten lettuce wraps prior to this experience. Oh my gosh, were they amazing! Fresh and healthy and superbly prepared.

The chicken dish might have been good, but I elected to give my portion to my son since it looked good to him. My wife said it was good.

My only complaint about the meal is this was one Disney meal that for once was not sized to really share. Evening sharing with my wife two plates of food, we were content, but by no way filled, which I suppose is a good thing for a long, hot day in the park. I suppose it also left room for those Coconut rum spiked pineapple Dole whips we had shortly thereafter.

Father’s Day at Disney Epcot’s Le Cellier

FATHER’S DAY LE CELLIER – When my wife initially got us reservations for one of the most esteemed restaurants in all of Disney World, I was extremely excited to finally be eating at Le Cellier. Then winter happened, everyone had extra snow days, and our entire trip had to be cancelled and rescheduled. There went my dreams of eating at Le Cellier now that we were only a couple months from the trip.

However, my wife was fortunate enough to secure a lunch reservation for our family during our visit to Epcot. As luck would have it, we also realized as the trip got closer that we were going to be eating at Le Cellier on Father’s Day. Sweet! That meant this dad gets free rein of the steak menu then, right?

Actually, my wife and I decided before we went on the trip that we would share as many meals as we could since they are typically substantially sized to accommodate more than one person. Although Mrs. InACents did give me the freedom to order whatever I wanted off the menu.

After comparing the prices and the many potential options on the menu, we actually found it more economical to order several appetizers dishes and share them versus ordering one entree. So what did we go with?

With so many delicious options, we decided to start out our meal with a classic Canadian dish, Poutine. We opted for the Pulled BBQ Pork Poutine; fries topped with cornbread croutons, house-made barbeque sauce, pulled pork, and jalapeno aoli ($13.00).

Next up was a bowl of the fan favorite Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup made with Moosehead beer and “Nueske’s” applewood smoked bacon ($10.00).

For the next course, I elected to go with the Seared Scallops with cauliflower puree, jalapeno pepper relish, popped Sorghum, in a citrus blend sauce ($15.00).

While my wife went with Steakhouse Caesar with a grilled lemon, San Joaquin Gold, garlic-buttermilk dressing, Boquerones, and brioche toast ($11.00).

Our kids elected to go with the favorite, mac and cheese. Fortunately, they loaded up on bread, because the portion size was dramatically small, even for a kids meal.

I can honestly say, each item we ate was fantastic. My favorite was probably the poutine while my wife (and kids) really enjoyed the soup. Actually, our oldest son liked the soup so much, we ordered him his own bowl.

In total, my wife and I spent a combined $49 for 4 courses. By contrast, entrees ranged from $27-64 each, with an average price in the $40 range. By sharing meals, we not only got to sample many of the fan favorite menu selections, but also saved a little bit of money.

What was the best menu item you ate at Le Cellier?

Review: Beaches at Vilano

During a recent trip down to Florida, we stayed and visited with some great friends of ours. One day we decided to go out and explore the St. Augustine area, and on the way stopped in for some lunch at one of their favorites, Beaches at Vilano.

Since we were there for an early lunch on a weekday, we had no problem getting a beach table, right on the sand. This also meant within seconds of hitting the sand, 5 kids were shoes off and running along the beach. The restaurant is located right on the water of the Tolomata River.

Parents could casually talk and hangout while the kids scavenged for things on the beach and played in the shallow surf.

The one downside to having kids and a beachside eating is the sand. Despite washing them up before eating, they still managed to get some sand in their food, which tarnished the experience a little bit for them.

I went with the Sunset Shrimp Tacos (Local shrimp, lightly fried and tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce, topped with toasted sesame seeds and cilantro. Served with pineapple mango salsa.) I also substituted coleslaw for fries.

I tend to be able to tolerate quite a bit of heat to my food, and elected to top mine with some jalapenos from my friends nachos. The heat really was a nice contrast to the sweet of the sauce and salsa. Everything was extremely fresh and excellently prepared.

Overall, Beaches at Vilano was an excellent choice for a light lunch in the St. Augustine area.
