141012 Hofbrauhaus Cleveland Grand Opening

Hofbräuhaus Cleveland: The Best Party in the City

Our family likes to celebrate our German heritage by sitting around a table and enjoying not only each others company, but good traditional food. Traditionally around Cleveland, there are not too many conveniently located German restaurants. I suppose that is why our family goes out of our way to make sure we stop at some of our favorite German restaurants in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

It was a couple years ago when our family was traveling through Cincinnati, Ohio and Newport, Kentucky (across the Ohio River from each other) that we asked locals for recommendations on there to eat. It was at that point we were directed to visit Hofbräuhaus Newport, and history would be sealed on experiencing the traditional German heritage here in the States.

Our family has since visited Hofbräuhaus Newport several times over the past several years, as the family friendly atmosphere, live entertainment, and great food made for a terrific experience.

When we heard the news a year or so ago that Cleveland would be getting their own Hofbräuhaus, our family was elated!

The 24,000 square foot complex is located adjacent to Playhouse Square and combines a new building with the former Hermit Club, the nation’s oldest continuously operating private club devoted to nonprofessional performing arts. The Tudor style building was the perfect fit to meld the Hofbräuhaus theme into the community.

As the soft opening date drew near, we made our plans to make a trip into the city to experience the new Hofbräuhaus Cleveland. While we secured early reservations to visit on opening day, we knew crowds were expected to be high when those reservations were cancelled a couple days prior to the event. So we knew hustling our family of five down as close to the 5:00 opening was going to be imperative to getting a seat.

Fortunately, my in-laws were able to get there right away and “save” us a seat until we could get there at 5:30. Upon our arrival, the music was loud, the beer was flowing, and the place was PACKED! Standing room only within under a half hour of Hofbräuhaus Cleveland’s arrival to the city.

It was a full fledged party, and we were delighted to be a part of it. We happen to be sitting directly in front of the band, so in addition to the loud mass of people, the music made it nearly impossible to talk to anyone, which in a way was great!

As a nervous parent of 5, 3, and 1 year olds, I was not sure how our youngest would deal with the loud sounds. However, it turns out his German blood runs deep, as he dove into eating a giant Bavarian pretzel, sipping on lemonade, and dancing to the music. The only thing we were missing was our lederhosen and dirndls!

Due to the soft opening and MASSIVE crowd, the menu was limited for the evening, which was a terrific blend of German food.

Our family ordered the Schintzel Wiener Art ($17.59)(Breaded pork, Hofbrau potato salad, and cranberry relish); Hofbräuhaus Wurstlplatte ($15.99)(Frankfurter, chicken sausage, and Bratwurst, served with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and German mustard); and Kartoffel Suppe (Potato Soup)($5.69)(Traditional creamy potato soup garnished with sour cream, cheddar cheese, and green onions).

Girls also walked around all evening selling freshly made pretzels. While our family has yet to visit the mother land, it surely felt like a little bit of Germany had found its way into our hometown of Cleveland.

With the inside beer hall seating approximately 450 people, and many of the building levels and rooms yet to be open to the public, many people overflowed to the outside 1,000 person beer garden. Hofbräuhaus also did a great job of providing an outside bar and freshly grilled sausages.

Honestly, our family had no idea what to expect as part of the grand opening of Hofbräuhaus Cleveland. The welcome party into our city was a tremendous experience, as the food was miraculously served in under a half hour (on opening day with standing room only, that is impressive) and was FANTASTIC! Dare I even say the food was better than the Hofbräuhaus Newport! The atmosphere of the crowd was addicting, and this coming from a dad that does not drink beer and was not as “influenced” to have fun as those around us.

Seeing as our family spends a great deal of time at the adjacent Playhouse Square, we are so happy to have the Hofbräuhaus Cleveland, as it is the best party in town!

Reinventing the Hot Dog on the Square

Our family loves to try new and exciting dining places, especially those with a unique feel to make them stand out. So we recently heard of a little 50’s style hot dog restaurant down in Medina, Ohio called Dan’s Dogs, and set up a night this week to take a trip down and try them out.

The restaurant is located in the town of Medina, Ohio, in the historic square district with some buildings dating back to the early 1800’s.

Once inside the restaurant, you are instantly transported back in time to the 1950’s, when Medina first was chartered as a city.

Dan’s Dogs serves up classic 1950’s diner style foods the way they used to be made. In addition, the prices were fantastic, making you want to try and sample as many of the foods as possible.

First up, our family decided to go with a round of handmade milkshakes, made the old fashioned soda shop way…milk and ice cream blended together. You will not find any of that fast food garbage they pass off as a milkshake here. This was the real deal, and you could taste the difference.

I went with a blended concoction of strawberry and banana, and it was great! My wife went with a house made root beer shake and said it was very good. A large shake was only $2.85, which was an amazing deal and oh so tasty!

We also ordered our one ice cream loving son the orange creamsicle kids milkshake, which he really enjoyed.

As we waited for our food, our kids were able to wonder the entire restaurant and play in the area adjacent to the bar, where tons of kids book and toys were set up for them to enjoy. They loved the atmosphere and all of the things they could explore. Dan’s Dogs proves to be a very family friendly and fun atmosphere for kids!

Next up was a round of hot dogs and sides. We started off our meal with a basket of fries covered in chili and cheese. They were so good, but maybe because I am a sucker for chili on foods! My only complaint about the fries was I really would have liked to see a housemade fry, rather than the processed kind. This makes a big difference in the quality of a fry, and people love that old-fashioned, real taste. I would rather pay a little more for a real fry than have the fast food style you can get anywhere.

I elected to try three of their regular sized hot dogs; you can upgrade to the jumbo dogs for typically $1 more. First I went with their signature Clevelander.

The buttered, split topped bun was filled with their hot dog, then layered with fries, BBQ sauce, and homemade cole slaw ($2.30).

140903 Dan's Dogs The Clevelander

Oh man, was it delicious! One of my biggest pet peeves of restaurants is when they do not make their own cole slaw and use the cheap, mass produced junk. You can always taste the difference, and Dan’s Dogs does it right! In addition, the buttered bun really helped tie and make the sandwich great.

Next, I went with their Mac Attack ($2.25), which was the classic hot dog covered in homemade mac & cheese. These guys were on fire with unique creations that were mighty tasty. My only complaint about this one was my bun was slightly burnt, taking away from the nice buttery bun that was on the other dogs.

140903 Dan's Dogs Slaw Dog & Mac Attack

Last, I went with a classic Slaw Dog ($2.30), topped with my two favorites, chili and cole slaw. By this point in the meal, after downing a complete milkshake and two hot dogs, my body was beginning to push back from the onslaught of tasty treats I was feeding it. Still, a mighty tasty hot dog!

Others in our party enjoyed dogs such as the Hammy Slammy (hot dog wrapped in grilled ham, honey mustard, and melted Swiss cheese- $2.35) and the kids enjoyed classics like the Puppy Red Baron (plain hot dog)- $2.50, Puppy Corn Dog- $3.25, and Puppy Size Cheeseburger $3.05.

There were so many awesome and unique hot dog choices on the menu, that I want to return again in the future and try some of the others. I was especially impressed with Dan’s Dogs, which is uniquely impressive from the standpoint that I am not even a big hot dog fan.

Do note, the restaurant is cash only, which is one way they help keep their food at very affordable rates.

If you would like to visit Dan’s Dogs, a Hotdog Eatery, find them about an hour south of Cleveland at 111 West Liberty Street, Medina, OH 44256.

Review: Disney Be Our Guest Restaurant for Lunch

The new Disney Fantasyland opened within the past year, and during our families recent trip to the area, we were excited to finally get to see it. In order to save a little bit of money, our family elected to have lunch at the new Beauty and the Beast Be Our Guest restaurant.

Lunch is served quick service, where you order from a touch screen, and your meal is brought to your table. If you elect to eat dinner at Be Our Guest, your meal is served full table service.

The theming of the restaurant was great! It felt like you were entering the Beast’s castle and going into his secret world. After ordering your meal from touchscreen displays, you were given a rose buzzer to take to your table so the staff knew where to deliver your food.

Be Our Guest features three dining rooms

  • The West Wing – featuring the enchanted rose
  • The Rose Gallery – available during lunch period only
  • The Ballroom

During lunch, we were free to sit where we wanted, and choose to eat in the west wing. We had the table directly in front of the enchanted rose, which was a pretty cool visual. Also in the room was a torn picture above the fireplace of the Prince. Be sure to keep an eye out, because in the blink of an eye you might see a glimpse of the Beast.

Both my wife and I decided to order the Carved Prime Chuck Roast Beef Sandwich, served warm on a Baguette with Horseradish Sour Cream and Pommes Frites ($12.49).

The meal was a real disappointment for both of us. The roast beef was really tough and gristly, making for a difficult sandwich to eat and enjoy. Even if the meat had been better, there was really no distinct feature of the sandwich they made us say wow. For Disney standards, it was rather…standard with nothing special. The Pommes Frites were ok, but again, I would have expected there to be something on them to make them stand apart from a standard fry.

140620 Disney Be Our Guest Restaurant

For the kids, we ordered them the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup ($8.49). While I did not try any of it, they really enjoyed it.

We also choose to order a selection of the desserts to share among us. While the desserts were good, they again left no spectacular taste that made us need to have them again. In addition, the cupcakes were the standard size. For over $4 a piece, I would have liked to see them a larger portion.

140620 Disney Be Our Guest Restaurant

Overall, I was glad we were able to experience the new Disney Fantasyland and the Be Our Guest restaurant. However, short of returning for a sit down dinner in the future, I see no reason to need to return there for lunch again unless the Beast elects to release the better food from his kitchen.
