Discover Card Credit Health Check Feature Evaluated

This week, upon signing into my wife’s Discover card account, I noticed a cool new feature that has been added to the system to evaluate your credit on a small scale. Discover calls the new program Credit Health Check. I am not sure why only my wife’s account showed this feature, as both of my Discover cards did not have it available.

Upon clicking on the link, and verifying your identity, the system takes you to a page to show how you rate in credit on a couple of scales. Here are the three scales available in my wife’s account: Credit Inquiries, Discover Card Late Payments, and Payment History on Other Accounts.

At first, I was alarmed when I saw the wording associated with Discover Card Late Payments.

You have had one or no late payments on your Discover card account within the last 12 months.

Having “one or no” late payments is a big difference in our opinion, as we work hard to stay current on all of our accounts.

One the nice features built into the Credit Health Check system is easy access to then be able to pull your free annual credit reports from annualcreditreport.com. It is a nice reminder to stay on top of all your credit reports at least once per year. Personally, we like spacing our free reports out every 4 months so we are able to pull at least 3 per year (one from each agency).

Besides the new Credit Health Check feature, we continue to also take advantage to the Money Messenger program, where we can send “anyone” up to $500 per month, and earn rewards on the transfer of funds. While we wish they would increase our measly $500 limit per account, sending $1500 back and forth between each of our accounts (3 in total) does earn us up to $15 per month in rewards ($5 on the Discover More card and 500 miles on each of our Discover Miles cards). More importantly, I learned the other day that the Money Messenger program also allows us to quickly get up to the tiered minimum spend to earn the full 1% back in rewards per anniversary year.

If you do not carry a Discover card in your wallet, now is an excellent time as the current offer is Discover® More Card – $150 Cashback Bonus with $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 Days.
