Review: Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre Presidential Suite

We follow several deal sites to alert us instantly when flight and hotel deals are found online. Back in September 2018, after just returning from our annual trip up to Canada, we received a notice that the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre had mispriced their Presidential Suite. With rates typically around $700 CAD per night, they were coming up around $135 USD after taxes per night. That was an incredible deal that we just could not pass up.

So a year in advance, we booked the Hilton Presidential Suite for a trip in August 2019.

We love visiting the Toronto area because we use our Cedar Fair Platinum season passes to visit Canada’s Wonderland. The particular weekend we selected also happen to correspond with the Taste of Greece event at Canada’s Wonderland. Plus it would be the first time our kids would get to see the new Yukon Striker roller coaster after my wife and I attended the media event back in April.

When we got to the Hilton property, we were all super impressed with the grand lobby and all of us knew this was not going to be our typical hotel stay. We easily checked in and headed up to our Presidential Suite on the ninth floor of the hotel.

Upon entry to the room, there was a modern hallway with rooms off in each direction.

Immediately to the left was a smaller bathroom complete with walk-in shower and no real door.

To the right was a small kitchen and dining room overlooking the lobby of the hotel.

Straight ahead was the living room with large seating area. All the televisions and lights were on when we entered the room, which was really nice. Plus the TVs had a personalized welcome message for me, which was a nice added touch.

Finally to the far left was the bedroom complete with a king bed and en-suite featuring a soaker tub, shower, toilet and bidet, which of course our kids were fascinated with the idea.

The room was nice, though it said in the listing that it slept 4 guests, but with no second bed. So our two oldest kids slept on the couch, which they were fine with the accommodations.

The hotel in general is part of a much larger complex complete with convention center, shopping and spa. Sadly the pool was just alright and nothing too impressive that one might expect at a premium Hilton property.

The one thing that really bugged us is the property chooses to charge guests for parking. We understand this additional add-on in places like congested cities; however, this hotel is far from Toronto, an airport, etc. It makes no sense why they do not provide complimentary parking for their guests. What was even more baffling is they front desk staff said the police will come around and ticket. Wait, on private property? It was just another money grab and BS charge.

While it was nice to get to stay in a Presidential Suite, the location of the hotel is not quite convenient for visiting Canada’s Wonderland, as it is at least 30 minutes away, assuming traffic is not that bad.

When we came up in April, we made the mistake of taking the 407 and then receive a price gouging bill a month later in the mail. So we were determined to everything in our power to avoid toll roads driving to Canada’s Wonderland on this visit. Unfortunately, that also means dealing with the huge traffic congestion problem plaguing the Toronto area.

This was the first trip to Canada where we really had long waits dealing with traffic. Not only was it bad trying to get to the park and then the hotel, but coming home and trying to cross the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls had long waits. So we redirected towards the Peace Bridge down near Buffalo. Unfortunately, we still ended up sitting in about a 90 wait to get across the border. Not sure what the deal was this trip, but it left us not wanting to return up north for the foreseeable future.

Overall, we still had a fun weekend and really enjoyed getting to stay in the Presidential Suite, though kids, no, we will not be staying there again unless there is another great deal.

Hotel Review: Embassy Suites Atlanta

Besides surprising my family with a visit to Dinosaur World on our families recent trip to Florida, I was most excited about our stay in Atlanta. With my wife planning all of the Disney details, I was responsible for the couple hotel rooms we needed on the way down as well as the trip back home.

With a planned stop in Atlanta, and a proposed itinerary of seeing the World of Coke in downtown Atlanta, I knew after the long drive we wanted to be close to Centennial Olympic Park. Fortunately, out Hilton HHonors points came in handy with the Embassy Suites.

I originally priced out a single night stay at 60,000 points…ouch. However, a couple weeks prior to our departure, I noticed a HHonors special points discounted rate for a 2 Room Conference Suite – 2 Double Beds.

The below screen shot is of a random date in the future. However, our rate was only 39,800 points.

Embassy Suites Atlanta HHonors Special

The nice thing was we were securing a larger room with a separate conference room for less points than a standard room.

Upon parking and valeting our vehicle ($30), our family was directed to the 7th floor, the second from the top. We had a corner room, which we presume is where all of the conference rooms are located.

The room included a large seating area with a flat screen television and desk. The conference table was off to the side. Between the seating area and the bedroom was small bar area with fridge, closet, and large bathroom (relative to hotel rooms). The bedroom than had dual double beds.

While the view outside may not have been the best, the hotel is situated exactly next door to Centennial Olympic Park, as well as the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coke. Due to our very limited time in the city, it was the perfectly located hotel that allowed us to enjoy the area within walking distance of the hotel.

Evening Reception

As part of your stay at the Embassy Suites, you are also entitled to take part in the nightly evening reception from 5:30-7:30 PM. Guests can enjoy complimentary drinks, including wine, beer, and alcohol, as well as light snacks. This was a perfect way to keep our kids fulfilled with light, healthy snacks until dinner.

Rooftop Pool

The Embassy Suites Atlanta features a rooftop pool and jacuzzi overlooking Centennial Olympic Park. Our family did not get to go up and enjoy the pool till after 9:00 at night. By that time the heat had died down, and paired with light winds, the pool was rather cool to enjoy.

It should also be noted that the pool is shared between the hotel and adjacent resident condos.

Breakfast

As part of your stay at the Embassy Suites Atlanta, you get access to cooked-to-order breakfast at the onsite Ruth’s Chris Steak House. This is the one aspect that I anticipated a great breakfast and was rather disappointed. Guests could choose a cooked-to-order omelet, but other than that, it was standard buffet breakfast fare such as homestyle potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes. Guests could also choose from fresh fruit, though the selection was limited and missing a bowl during our visit. There is a hot oatmeal section, juice/coffee bar, and assorted pastries.

Considering breakfast was at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the breakfast was no better than what we had at a Hampton Inn the night before. I would have really liked to see the breakfast have more creative options.

In Conclusion

Our family really enjoyed our stay at the Embassy Suites Atlanta. The location was superb, and we always felt safe within the vicinity. The extra amenities, and discounted point rate made it a great value. Plus with the extra large room, our family had plenty of space to spread out.

Hotel Review: Hilton Columbus Downtown

Our family recently did a short weekend trip to the Columbus, Ohio area for the AAA Great Vacations Travel Expo. For those that follow on Facebook/Twitter, you would have seen our tribulation trying to acquire a reasonably priced hotel room on points.

At the current time, our family has ample points in the Hilton HHonors, Club Carlson, and IHG Rewards. With the abundance of winter weather in the area, we wanted to be directly downtown and within close distance to the convention center.

In searching for Hilton properties, I really liked both the Hampton Inn and Hilton Columbus Downtown, as both hotels offered pools and were within close proximity to the expo. In searching point opportunities, I was disappointed to see that HHonors only offered straight point options for a two queen bed room at either property, and they ran from 40,000-50,000+ points per night for a $200+ room. Ouch! I consider that a TON of points for any room, let alone a $200 room.

HHonors did offer a point + cash option; however, they were only for king rooms. The fact that Hilton choose to offer point + cash options, but only for select rooms, when all were available, was extremely disappointing.

So I secured a night at the Hampton Inn, which came complete with a complimentary breakfast. However, it also came with a steep 40,000 points price tag.

Fortunately, I am diligent about keeping on top of reservations and after checking availability daily, the Hilton Columbus Downtown opened up with a points + cash option for a double queen room. For only 16,000 points + $65, I was able to secure a nicer hotel.

Both properties came highly rated on TripAdvisor, so I was comfortable with either property. The way I ultimately made our choice in the end was because I was in essence paying $65 to keep 24,000 of my points we have worked so hard to acquire. No where could I get that type of value.

Even with my Hilton HHonors AMEX, it would take $4,800-6,000 in spend to earn those points back.

Hotel Review: Hilton Columbus Downtown

Upon checking into the hotel, we were all instantly impressed, as the Hilton Columbus Downtown was not the typical lower end properties we were accustomed to staying in. The lobby was beautiful with attractive artwork, contemporary furniture, and environmental design that gives the property a LEED certification.

Immediately after entering the room, the oohs and ahhs of my family was all worth the price. My wife proclaimed “this is the nicest hotel we have stayed in since Hawaii,” while our oldest son proclaimed “someone has colored on the ceiling.”

We happen to be located in a great location on the sixth floor. We were in room 622, which happened to be at the corner of the building, and ideally located, at least for our boys, adjacent to active railroad tracks.

I am not sure if everyone receives welcome gifts, but once the front desk agent saw us with the boys, they gave us a bag full of bottled water and locally made popcorn. Jackpot for little snack monsters.

The furnishings in the room were excellent and higher end than we were accustomed. My only complaint is I wish the room came with a microwave.

Aside from the incredible furnishings of the Hilton Columbus Downtown and the well appointed room, my major complaint with Hilton is the lack of complimentary wifi! In today’s day in age, and especially for those of us that have status (we have Silver currently as card holders), that fact that we do not get complimentary wifi is atrocious. Wifi comes with such little cost, that with a $200+ room, it should be included. That is like if hotels started charging for cable. It should be included in the price, as part of doing business and to attract customers.

In Hilton’s defense, they do offer complimentary wifi, though only within the lobby. Fortunately, the large atrium meant I could go outside my room and connect my phone to the network to download email, etc.

All in all, we were absolutely impressed with the Hilton Columbus Downtown hotel. The boys loved swimming in the pool. The weekend we were at the property also happen to correspond with Ohayocon, which made for some very interesting people watching.
