Dear Lucky’s Cafe:
After a night at the Renaissance Cleveland, and a quick jaunt around the downtown area, we headed over to the Tremont District to try a place my wife had been wanting to try, Lucky’s Cafe. We arrived around 9:30 AM for a nice breakfast meal. Lucky’s Cafe is known for using fresh, local ingredients, and it must be good if Guy Fieri, of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives (Food Network) has been there.
Located in a quaint little area of the Tremont District, in what used to be an old house, rested Lucky’s Cafe. After entering the building, we stood in the hostess waiting area for approximately 5 minutes as servers rushed past us waiting on other tables and not even acknowledging us. After finally asking if we were supposed to seat ourselves, a server took us to a table nestled in the corner. Looking backwards is always hindsight, but I should have seen the writing on the wall that things were going to go downhill if they could not even get us seated with tables open.
We immediately placed our orders when a server approached the table as we had ample time to look over the assortment of menu options.
Fast forward about 10 minutes and our food was brought to the table, when we had not even been brought water or our drinks. So the order for drinks went in a second time. This time half way through our meals, my smoothie finally arrived and had to be shared between all of us. Finally at the end of the meal, the server we originally had finally showed up to the table to clean our plates away, and again went to process the rest of our beverages.
When our boys and my wife’s drinks were finally brought over in to-go cups, the server disappeared and never came back again. I am not asking for preferential treatment just because we have kids, and I realize the place was busy. However, at least bring our boys their drinks in a timely fashion. After our order was placed, we did not see our server again until she took the dishes away.
On a good note, the food was of high, fresh quality. For the boys we order the:
Baked Mac-N-Cheese: Cheddar, brie, parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses, baked with pasta and cream topped with brioche bread crumbs and served with house-made apple sauce. (Food Network’s Guy Fieri ate this)
My wife ordered the:
Curried Chicken Salad: Served on housemade multigrain with garden romaine and potato salad.
Finally, I had a Cuban sandwich with ham, pulled pork and apples. It was all excellent and fresh. The only downside was having nothing to drink to go with the meal after several attempts to get them.
My wife also had a keen observation too after we left. We were at the restaurant for approximately 45-60 minutes and we were the first people we saw actually leave the restaurant afterwards. In other words, every single table around us was still conversing, and apparently eating long after, and they had been there well before we arrived. That being said, it just seemed peculiar that service was not a high priority to get people served.
Maybe it was just a fluke of the restaurant, and as much as I wanted to complain to a manager, at that point I was just so frustrated and wanted out of there. I can say we ate at Lucky’s Cafe, but I can not say the experience was worthy of a return visit.
