Discover Drops Groupon Cashback to 10%

ShopDiscover

DISCOVER CARD GROUPON – One of the biggest advantages I am always promoting about the Discover card program is the ShopDiscover program. Since our family tends to travel more than the average American, we often purchase Groupons to partially fund our trips. There have even been a couple of trips that have specifically happened because of Groupon deals.

The fact that Discover card offered 15% cashback when linking through ShopDiscover to Groupon was an added reason to always use our Discover card to make the purchase. However, late last week I noticed that Discover had dropped the cashback bonus when linking through to Groupon from 15% down to 10%. Along with the percentage drop, there were a couple of other noticeable differences.

Below is the official response from Discover:

When Groupon was at 15% Cashback Bonus, the Terms and Conditions excluded purchases of Groupon Goods and Groupon Getaways, and we received calls from cardmembers who were confused by this. So, in order for us to better the customer experience with Groupon, we have lowered the overall Cashback Bonus to 10% but are now able to offer it on Groupon Getaways and Groupon Goods.

While I do not like to see a loss of benefits for the customer, ShopDiscover and Groupon still set the standard with a 10% rebate on purchases. Just yesterday I posted about the Greater Cleveland Aquarium Groupon offer, and before making my purchase, I decided just to double check evrewards.com and see how the competition stacked up. Again, no one even come close to what Discover can offer in terms of cashback.

FatWallet is currently offering 8% cashback, with Big Crumbs trailing at 5.6%. The only other company I know of that even comes close is TopCashback.com, offering up to 15%, but only for new customers making select category purchases. Discover is still the leader of the cashback bonus!

Discover Card Terminates Relationship with CheapTickets.com

ShopDiscover

Back in early May, we evaluated the new ShopDiscover relationship with CheapTickets.com. At first I was really excited to see the possibility of savings for not only our family, but yours. However, as I started to dive closer into the workings of the offer, we discovered with CheapTickets was increasing the price of their tickets when going through the Discover card portal.

While I knew this practice existed, I was surprised at such a tactic with Discover, who tends to live up to a higher customer standard.

The really interesting piece, though, is that despite paying a higher price by going through the ShopDiscover portal, with the example we tested, the consumer still came out ahead. So basically, CheapTickets was trying to cover some of the cost of paying Discover a commission by slightly increasing prices, yet the consumer still won in the end.

A little over a week ago, we received an email from one of our contacts at Discover with some interesting news.

Just saw your recent post about CheapTickets
on ShopDiscover and wanted to make sure you were the first to know
we’ve decided to remove it from the website. We realized around the
same time you did that there was a slight discrepancy between prices
on CheapTickets when visiting from the ShopDiscover portal versus
visiting from outside the portal.

We’re removing CheapTickets for a couple of reasons. First, we
promise our cardmembers at least 5% in true rewards value through
ShopDiscover and we want to hold true to that promise. We also take
pride in having some of the highest reward payouts in the industry.
Finally, we don’t support any instances of a price increase
triggered by a visit through ShopDiscover and want cardmembers to earn
the true Cashback Bonus that’s advertised.

Now that the relationship between Discover and CheapTickets is finally terminated, I was given permission to discuss this issue.

I felt quite proud knowing that our little article maybe made a difference in looking out for the rights of the consumer. I was also very proud to know that Discover is looking out for our best interest when it comes to getting what is advertised in terms are real value out of the cashback bonus program.

Have you experienced any price increases when going through a shopping portal?

Discover Double Miles June 2013

We happen to have a local closeout/discount store that we frequent that exclusively accepts Discover Card, so this will work well on grocery purchases made next month. If Discover would have raised the spend threshold above $500, it might have garnered more use. However, we are also busily working towards our US Airways 15,000 mile bonus after spending $750 on both my wife and my cards. So it is for the better that we will get to spread the love next month.

As usual, one must register for the promotion by either calling Discover Card direct, or going to their website.

After signing into your account, you may not directly see the offer. At the top of your Discover home page, you will see a link for Account Profile. Click that and scroll down near the bottom.

Then under the Rewards Options. if you were targeted for the promotion, you should see the offer listed.
