A Review of the Hampton Inn Downtown Cincinnati Riverfront

Our last minute trip to the Cincinnati area for Day Out with Thomas came with needing last minute hotel arrangements. Needing a hotel room on a whim is one of the many reasons I enjoy collecting and using reward programs to help make things happen.

We are pretty full on Club Carlson points at the moment due to this past summers promotions; however, hotels around Cincinnati were either at inconvenient locations, had poor reviews, or were high on points for a $100/night stay. So overall, I was not completely satisfied with our options and looked to Priority Club and HHonors to evaluate our options.

While not the best redemption option, fortunately Hilton had the Hampton Inn Cincinnati-Riverfront (Downtown Area) located near the aquarium (another stop on our trip) at an affordable cash and points option. We always know that we will get a reliable product at Hampton Inns as we have stayed in many, so it is an easy sell. The free breakfast is also a nice benefit, especially with little hungry boys. Our Gold status with HHonors also afforded us a free bottle of water and a candy bar. Who says status does not have its benefits?

Really, there is no need to glorify a standard Hampton Inn. Our room had two beds and met all our families expectations for the night. The room also featured a fridge and microwave, both perfect for heating the boys late night snacks.

A note for the expected?

We spent a good deal of the evening in the pool, seeing as ours at home had been closed down for the season. Several other families and their kids spent a good deal of the evening at the pool too, making for friendly conversation among the parents and excellent kid interaction.

Our room overlooked the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati. Look at the picture and the beautiful scenery! Even that Cleveland Browns bus was interesting to look at, and there in lies the one problem.

I had no idea Cleveland was playing Cincinnati this weekend in football (queue the non-manly horns). So I thought it was interesting seeing the bus outside our hotel window. Well low and behold, every other drunk idiot in the area (the hotel is surrounded by liqueur stores, bars, etc.) also thought it most fascinating to look at, touch, and who knows what else happened all night long. The bus just seemed like a large target asking to be destroyed, and the noise and ruckus went on into the night. So much for a tranquil, river view. 🙂

Apparently carrying and drinking liquor outside is legal, as is apparent around the Hampton Inn.

Breakfast was the typical Hampton affair, with cereals, breads, pastries, yogurts, fruits, hot sausage, eggs, waffles, and sausage gravy. While the food was all rather bland, the staff was amazing and accommodating. I have never stayed in a more friendly breakfast staff Hampton before, as they not only kept the food supply full, but also cleared the tables as you finished eating.

Overall, the Hampton Inn Newport was exactly what our family needed, and thanks to a couple of points, we were able to have the cost down to $40 for the night. Despite the noise outside the hotel, which I can not blame Hampton on, we would absolutely stay at this property again.

A Review of the Kona Tiki Hotel (Big Island, Hawaii)

120618 Kona Tiki Hotel Our Room

After a busy couple days in Disneyland, and a half week on Oahu, both our family and my in-laws headed over to the Big Island, Hawaii to slow things down and spend some time relaxing. While researching where to stay on the Big Island, our Frommer’s Hawaii with Kids (Frommer’s With Kids) recommended a small, quaint, and very affordable hotel located on the shores, call the Kona Tiki Hotel (75-5968 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI).

While our stay on Oahu was comped using Priority Club points, we wanted to be mindful of cost on the Big Island when it comes to hotel accommodations. We do not travel so much by staying in high end resorts with lots of amenities we never use. The goal for our family is safe, clean, and comfortable, with a pool, and breakfast is always nice. Fortunately, the Kona Tiki Hotel met all of these requirements, with a keep it simple and affordable approach.

By most travelers accounts, the Kona Tiki probably may not be what most people are looking for when it comes to hotel accommodations. The rooms are simple, no fluff, or fancy kitchen or bathrooms. There is no television in the rooms (or anywhere as far as I could tell). Rooms do not come with air conditioning; why would you need it being ocean front with an open air concept? What Kona Tiki Hotel does give you is affordable, ocean front accommodations at awesome prices, including daily breakfast, that feels more like a welcoming, family-run (which it is) home.

At around $100 per night, the cost could not be beat for a Pacific Ocean front room, just steps away from the edge of the room. Our room was appointed with a queen and a single bed, and we upgraded to a kitchenette, complete with microwave, stove top, and sink. We were fortunate to have been given the end lower-level room, which was great with young kids. There is also a very small, and dated, bathroom, but again, the idea is keeping everything simple and affordable. Does one really NEED granite counter tops and rain shower heads? How much time do you really spend in the bathroom? The idea is to get in, and get out and enjoy what the beautiful islands of Hawaii has to offer.

WiFi was also available on property, although the signal was very weak in our room so I spent most my time online outside of the patio or at the pool to pick up a better signal. Rough life, I know. In reality, I really enjoyed my late nights sitting out on the patio, “surfing” my life away with the beauty of Hawaii as my backdrop. When attempting the recreate the scene at home, the boys just get sand everywhere and the salty, Ohio air just can not replicate that from the real ocean.

Note, credit cards are not accepted at the Kona Tiki, although they do accept Paypal (where credit can be processed). The idea behind the Kona Tiki is keep costs low, and pass that along to the customer. Therefore, when we arrived, the remaining balance due needed to be paid in cash, or I assume check. This was not a problem for us, as we had allocated cash towards this portion of the trip.

Also included in your rate is a free breakfast served poolside, which includes fresh fruits, bagels, breads, and muffins as well as juices and coffee. Breakfast was a terrific way to start your day, looking out into the ocean and watching the spinner dolphins go for a morning dive.

Guests can also use the pool 24-hours a day, just mind your noise and other guests. It was fun playing with the boys in the water while the ocean splashed over the lava rock walls. There are also boogie boards, pool noodles, and various other outdoor accessories that guests were able to use. We even left a couple things people could use too after we left.

Picture an ocean front hotel room, with the ocean 10 feet away from your room, and paper doors. You can almost hear the ocean crashing against the walls. Sounds terrific, doesn’t it? That is what I thought too. In reality, it takes some getting used to when you are trying to sleep. On rough nights, there is a constant barrage of white noise in the background, and for some reason it took me some time to get acclimated to the sound. Poor, pitiful me; queue the tiny violins!

One aspect that was really enjoyable to me, and I wish I would have gotten to do it more often, was a tip from a fellow guest. If you sit on the edge of the rock wall, and tossed pieces of bread, hot dog, or in my case, Goldfish crackers, into the water, you could watch eels come out from between the waves and rocks and eat them. In addition, little crabs were all around on the lava rocks, darting between the waves and sunning themselves. It was simply fascinating to watch the ocean creatures and having interaction with them. While not necessarily part of their typical ocean diet, it was a great start to feeling connected to the islands.

This guy ultimately met his demise, as I think the sun may have taken him out.

Unquestionably, the most delightful aspect of staying at the Kona Tiki Hotel was the managers on the property during our visit. The Kona Tiki hires people to come in and manage the property for them, often taking up retirees to perform the daily operation of the facility. During our stay, Ruben and his wife Jann, were in charge of managing the property, and were a month into their 3 month commitment. I will get more into all of that in a future post.

However, Ruben was an absolute delight to come “home” to everyday from our adventures around the island. He always warmly greeted us each morning at our breakfast, and impeccably kept up the facilities. At sundown, each night Ruben would come out with the guests for the torch lighting ceremony.

The Kona Tiki Hotel really was a terrific accompaniment to our time on the Big Island. The hotel was ideally located near restaurants, shopping, and other activities. The property itself was nicely appointed, and provided our family with a good nights rest (once you get used to the ocean waves), all for around $100 per night.

A Chocolate Crime Scene at the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber

We were excited to kick off our Hawaiian vacation and stay at the Holiday Inn Beachcomber located near Waikiki (2300 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815). After checking in and heading up the room, my wife and I were quickly getting things unpacked and ready for our stay, as well as getting all of us ready to head over to lunch and Waikiki Beach. What we did not realize was that a horrible crime scene had happened in our room. Lets put on our Super Sleuth hats and get this crime solved!

The Evidence and Crime Scene

At around 4:45 PM, we noticed are hotel bed was covered in chocolate. Within minutes, the trail of cocoa powder drool had made its way to the floor and furniture. Upon closer inspection of the crime scene, we even located pieces of chewed up macadamia nuts on the bed. By the looks of the crime scene, it appeared there was plenty of evidence, but where were the criminals and what was the weapon of choice?

The above pictures were taken early in the investigation, and within minutes, the trail of chocolate had spread further.

The Crime Scene Weapon

The Weapon

Upon entering our room, we were surprised to see a complimentary box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts (my favorite) sitting on the counter, as well as a welcome card due to our Platinum status with Priority Club. In the aftermath of getting ready to go to the beach, the wicked evil doers appeared to have ramshackled my box of chocolates. What an interesting choice of crime scene weapon.

The Crooked Criminals Are Caught

Two perpetrators were identified leaving the crime scene, clearly with the weapon of choice on their faces and hands. Upon capturing of the two suspects, we identified that felon number 1 (age 3) had broken into the sacred case of chocolate covered macadamia nuts and proceeded to stuff his face with a piece of candy. As suspect number 2 (age 1) approached his partner in crime, he was handed his own piece of confection. As suspect #1 chewed the weapon, he determined he did not like the nutty center, and spit it out on the bed and on his hands. In the meantime suspect #2 squirreled away his candy in his chipmunk cheeks, and as he processed the weapon, slowly dribbled it down his chin, onto his clothes, and hands, and subsequently onto the bed, furniture, and carpet.

When the two suspects were apprehended at the scene, #1 was quickly cleaned and booked for processing. Suspect #2 was also booked, and was required to empty his mouth of the weapon. Suspect #2 was temporarily released as further investigation of the scene was conducted. However, it was discovered that suspect #2 was storing additional weapon in his chipmunk cheeks, and had further positively identified a match to the chocolate trail.

The two assailants identities are being protected until proven guilty in a court of mommy and daddy law.

Following quarantining, the dad officer, first to arrive on the scene, had to strip one of the beds so the lab could process the evidence. Officer Dad also had to put on his HAZMAT suit to continue gathering evidence and cleaning the scene.

The following day, all guests heads hung low as they exited the room, walking past housekeeping, and hoping they were not permanently banned from the hotel less than 24-hours after arriving on the island.
