There has been a lot of discussion last week about Hertz’s new promotion offering free Gold membership ($60 annual fee waived) plus 500 free points worth a free weekend day.

Yes on the surface this is a great deal. However, what nobody has mentioned is that a year from now, you need to remember to cancel the gold membership, or otherwise you will get charged the $60 annual fee. Personally, we rarely rent a vehicle when traveling. Therefore, this program will offer little benefit to those that rarely rent a car. I would hate a year from now to see a charge for $60 on my account all because I failed to remember to cancel.

It is a great business idea for Hertz, and a potential money maker, but not worth my risk.
