Hilton HHonors to Discontinue Points & Fixed Miles Earning

Hilton HHonors Stamp

While Hilton HHonors points have become less and less valuable over the years, one of the nice little benefits I always enjoyed was the ability to Double Dip by earning HHonors points + miles in my favorite programs for each stay.

The HHonors program allows guest the following earning redemptions when staying at their properties.

Points and Points – Earn 10 Base Points, plus an additional 5 Bonus Points per eligible US dollar spent.

Points and Variable Miles – Earn 10 Base Points, plus 1 mile per eligible US dollar spent.

Points and Fixed Miles – Earn 10 Base Points per eligible US dollar spent, plus 500 miles per stay.

Our family tends to stay in cheaper hotels in the Hilton brand, specifically Hampton Inns and Holiday Inns. As a result, we tend to try and keep our nightly rate close to $100 per night. Therefore, we always preferred to have our setting to the Points and Fixed Miles option, allowing us a guaranteed 500 miles, since our bills typically never went over $500 for a weekend.

Today, via email, we were notified of Hilton’s plans to discontinue the Points and Fixed Miles option.

On January 6, 2014, we will discontinue the Points & Fixed Miles Earning Style. At this time, you will automatically start to earn variable miles, or 10 HHonors Base Points plus one airline mile (or kilometer) per eligible US dollar spent for most stays.

While Hilton is not getting rid of the ability to earn airline miles along with HHonors points, this is clearly an attempt to lower their costs associated with those of us who stay in the more affordable properties.
