Tony’s Town Square Restaurant & Main Street Electrical Parade

During our families recent trip to Disney World, my wife and I disagreed on one of our dining reservations. She was all for eating at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, located right at the entrance into the park, because of the Lady and the Tramp theme and because we had never eaten there before. I was a little more apprehensive since the limited reviews I had read of the restaurant were not all that enticing.

However, our friend Tonya had visited Tony’s Town Square right before our trip, and wrote a review on Traveling Mom, which had me a little more interested in having a good meal. Noise…I can deal with, after all I have three young kids. Good quality food and the Disney experience was what I was there to enjoy.

On one of our last days in the parks, and with very few sit down table service restaurants in the park, we elected to have dinner at Tony’s Town Square.

My wife had prearranged via Disney Dining reservations out table for eight people at 8:00 PM, since the Main Street Electrical Light Parade started at 9:00. I however, had a plan to try and arrive there early and request a patio table with direct views of the parade. So I rushed ahead of our party as fast as I could and got to the front desk approximately 45 minutes prior to our reservation to see if I could get the special request. While I was worried I made my party wait a really long time for a table, I had hopes that it would all be worth it.

Fortunately, the staff was great, and while they could not promise anything, said they would let us know what they could do. By around 8:15-8:30, we were called to our tables on the front porch. Due to the size of our party, they could not seat us together, but we were at adjacent tables overlooking the parade route.

Long before we even got seated, guests were already lining Main Street for their favorite view. I was just so excited that I could play a minor part in providing a little surprise to make my father-in-laws 60th birthday just a little more special. We could have sat anywhere in the restaurant and been seated much sooner, but how cool is it to have a patio table view of the parade?

Unfortunately, we happen to get a cast member that must not have been having the most magical day, as she was not the most friendly. It was not till the end of the dinner, where I was finally able to joke around with her enough to get her to loosen up.

For dinner, I opted to order Chicken Parmigiana (a lightly breaded chicken breast with marinara sauce, topped with melted mozzarella over spaghetti- $20.99)

This is one of the few restaurants my wife and I elected not to share a meal, and thank goodness we ordered our own. She opted to order the Seasonal Ravioli, which was a chicken marsala style for $17.99.

While my wife’s entree was good, my chicken parmigiana was ok, but nothing notable. The portion size was acceptable, but smaller than I expected. I like a big bowl of pasta, and I found myself still hungry from the experience. Let alone, my chicken and sauce really did not have much flavor, and I found it rather bland.

The real gem came in the form of the Main Street Electrical parade. We could not have timed it any more perfect. We were actually eating during the parade, so it is not like we were sitting around wasting time for it to start. The staff prevented people from walking around on the patio during the parade too, which was an excellent touch.

My only complaints were I think the lights of the restaurant should have been dimmed during the parade. Sitting under a bright porch kind of lost the impact of the parade. I understand people are eating, but the lights could have at least dimmed to be a little more ambient. Also, the area directly in front of the restaurant was under construction with perimeter walls. While they were low walls, the angle of the porch to the parade was slightly obstructed.

Regardless, I think everyone enjoyed the experience at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, and the waitress even brightened all of our day by bringing a happy birthday card over for my father-in-law with Lady and the Tramps footprints, a cute touch.

Review: Disney Be Our Guest Restaurant for Lunch

The new Disney Fantasyland opened within the past year, and during our families recent trip to the area, we were excited to finally get to see it. In order to save a little bit of money, our family elected to have lunch at the new Beauty and the Beast Be Our Guest restaurant.

Lunch is served quick service, where you order from a touch screen, and your meal is brought to your table. If you elect to eat dinner at Be Our Guest, your meal is served full table service.

The theming of the restaurant was great! It felt like you were entering the Beast’s castle and going into his secret world. After ordering your meal from touchscreen displays, you were given a rose buzzer to take to your table so the staff knew where to deliver your food.

Be Our Guest features three dining rooms

  • The West Wing – featuring the enchanted rose
  • The Rose Gallery – available during lunch period only
  • The Ballroom

During lunch, we were free to sit where we wanted, and choose to eat in the west wing. We had the table directly in front of the enchanted rose, which was a pretty cool visual. Also in the room was a torn picture above the fireplace of the Prince. Be sure to keep an eye out, because in the blink of an eye you might see a glimpse of the Beast.

Both my wife and I decided to order the Carved Prime Chuck Roast Beef Sandwich, served warm on a Baguette with Horseradish Sour Cream and Pommes Frites ($12.49).

The meal was a real disappointment for both of us. The roast beef was really tough and gristly, making for a difficult sandwich to eat and enjoy. Even if the meat had been better, there was really no distinct feature of the sandwich they made us say wow. For Disney standards, it was rather…standard with nothing special. The Pommes Frites were ok, but again, I would have expected there to be something on them to make them stand apart from a standard fry.

For the kids, we ordered them the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup ($8.49). While I did not try any of it, they really enjoyed it.

We also choose to order a selection of the desserts to share among us. While the desserts were good, they again left no spectacular taste that made us need to have them again. In addition, the cupcakes were the standard size. For over $4 a piece, I would have liked to see them a larger portion.

Overall, I was glad we were able to experience the new Disney Fantasyland and the Be Our Guest restaurant. However, short of returning for a sit down dinner in the future, I see no reason to need to return there for lunch again unless the Beast elects to release the better food from his kitchen.

Review: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Yak & Yeti

DISNEY’S YAK & YETI – During my wife and my honeymoon back in 2008, we went to Disney World, and during our inaugural visit to the Animal Kingdom theme park, we dined at Yak & Yeti. This sit down restaurant features pan-Asian Nepalese-style cuisine, and I vaguely remember not being entirely impressed, though not disappointed, in the experience. Overall, we really never thought we would ever return to Yak & Yeti again.

It was also during a recent visit by my brother-in-law that he elected to try the Duck with Anandapur Glaze, and he fell in love. Fate had it that we were then destined to return to Yak & Yeti when we all visited together this past June for my father-in-laws 60th birthday.

During this recent visit to Yak & Yeti, I was off with one of our children, so my wife ordered the food for us to share.

First up was the Lettuce Cups for Two (Minced chicken breast, chopped vegetables, Saigon Haison sauce, crisp lettuce cups) for $13.99.

In addition, we shared an order of Crispy Honey Chicken (Tempura chicken, broccoli, carrots, honey sauce and choice of jasmine or brown rice) for $17.99.

From what I recall, I do not think I had ever eaten lettuce wraps prior to this experience. Oh my gosh, were they amazing! Fresh and healthy and superbly prepared.

The chicken dish might have been good, but I elected to give my portion to my son since it looked good to him. My wife said it was good.

My only complaint about the meal is this was one Disney meal that for once was not sized to really share. Evening sharing with my wife two plates of food, we were content, but by no way filled, which I suppose is a good thing for a long, hot day in the park. I suppose it also left room for those Coconut rum spiked pineapple Dole whips we had shortly thereafter.
