Review: La Quinta Inn & Suites Pittsburgh North

Within the past year, our family earned a fairly substantial amount of free La Quinta Rewards points back when they held the Play & Stay promo. You in essence played a slot machine game and won free reward points. While the great majority of people did not start participating right from the start, those of us that started right away and played relentlessly by sharing on social media, garnered quite a few points. In total, we won about 30,000 points during the month and a half promotion.

Having never actually stayed in a La Quinta hotel, we had no idea what to expect, but we knew we would put to good use the points. So when we recently planned a short getaway to Pittsburgh, it worked out as a perfect opportunity to try and use the LQ points.

With two properties in Pittsburgh, we elected to go with the La Quinta Inn & Suites Pittsburgh North as opposed to the airport location. The TripAdvisor reviews were great, they offered a pool and free breakfast…all important items to our family.

However, as would turn out, their website listed pool and outdoor pool, the later of which I did not read. Therefore, we were disappointed to learn upon checking in that it was closed for the season.

Upon entering the lobby, it felt very familiar to the Hampton Inns we have stayed at so many times across the country. Nice, updated finishes and welcomed entry; far from the budget “motel” I had pictured in my mind.

Our room was appointed with dual queen beds and updated bath. The room also came with a larger fridge and microwave, which are always so welcome to have in a room with kids.

Breakfast in the morning was very clean, fresh, and great food. Again, it felt very reminiscent of staying at Hampton Inn properties.

Overall, our family was really impressed with our stay at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Pittsburgh North. The property was clean, adequate for a quick nights rest, and the free breakfast was great. The only thing they should have considered was an outside pool in Pittsburgh can only get used 5 months of the year. It would have been ideal if the pool was located indoors.

The location was also convenient, just north of the city in a commercial district. We were conveniently located close to stores and restaurants should they have been needed.

Our room cost 11,000 points per night for a roughly $100 room.

2015 Lego Kidsfest

2015 Lego Kidsfest Dates

The great majority of kids love Lego building sets. Our kids happen to be big fans of the Lego product mostly because my father-in-law is a huge influence on them and builds elaborate train layouts for them. The other cool thing about Lego is that the brand has pretty much remained the same product as it was when it was first created back in 1932. One could literally take those original pieces and use them interchangeably with today’s Lego building sets. Sure there are some companies that try and copy the Lego design since the patent is no longer valid, but there is nothing like a Lego brick.

Heck, I even still have my dozen or so Lego sets in my basement waiting to one day give my kids. They have so many of their own though, and still growing into the brand, that it has not been the best timing yet.

So when Lego Kidsfest came to Cleveland back in 2011, we jumped at the chance to go. Even with a two year old and 8 month old at the time of Lego Kidsfest, ours kids had a great time. With so many different areas to play with Lego, kids (and adults) of every age can find something to enjoy.

Lego Kidsfest released some of their 2015 dates.

• Arizona (Glendale): February 27–March 1

• Missouri (St Louis): March 20–22

• Tennessee (Nashville): April 17–19

• Texas (Austin): September 4–6

What is weird about the 2015 list of shows is it is substantially less than previous years.

2014: 7 shows
2013: 7 shows
2012: 6 shows
2011: 5 shows
2010: 3 shows

Saving money on tickets to Lego Kidsfest has been becoming more difficult over the years, since the demand for the shows has been high and results in selling out most time slots. The best bet to save a couple bucks or win free tickets is to find local bloggers. Lego partners with bloggers and offers a discount code for a couple bucks off the cost of tickets.

You typically do get some small sets of Lego to take home from the show. Therefore, it might be best to go to one of the earlier time slots to make sure to get some Lego. However, there are certain areas of the show that are built upon by guests as the event goes on. So if you would like to see some impressive builds, it might be better to go towards the end.
