1981 Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Guide
The year is 1981, and my life was underway and already starting to get influenced by the Disney brand. It is still hard for me to grasp that in 1981, Disney World was only celebrating its 10th anniversary, also known as the Tencennial. From October 1, 1981 till September 30, 1982, the Magic Kingdom celebrated her 10th anniversary with special shows and parades.
Some interesting items I discovered while researching this brochure:
Coca-cola was not the sole provider of beverages inside the Magic Kingdom during 1981. Pepsi and Frito-Lay were available in the Mile Long Bar and Pecos Bill Cafe located in Frontierland.
Note, near the rear of the brochure, EPCOT was on the verge of opening. The guide states,
“Beginning October 1, 1982, Epcot Center will offer “journeys” through two incredible dimensions. Future World will combine the Disney story-telling magic with state-of-the-art technical marvels. The result: Some of the most dazzling special effects ever seen. You’ll board Spaceship Earth for a journey back in time. Then go on to explore a world of new ideas, adventures, and experiences.
World Showcase represents a dream of the future where nations stand side-by-side in friendship. With the opening of Epcot Center, nine nations will be doing just that. Imagine dining at Alfredo’s of Rome, celebrating the Oktoberfest in a German biergarten, and trekking through the Canadian Wilderness – all in one afternoon. World Showcase will be a truly international celebration…and a world of wonders in its own right. Epcot Center…the dawn draws near.”
Just reading that gives me the goosebumps and makes me want to go back.
One should also take note, that on the very last page of the guide, Polaroid used to let guests use their cameras for free. You were only responsible for purchasing of the film. Genius marketing campaign, and worth every penny they would have paid for advertising back in the day.
Save Money, Travel More!
I used to love those Polaroid cameras back in the day, but now I look back at all the pictures I took with them and wish that they’d been better quality. Still a brilliant promo for them to run though.
@Steve: The thing I still can not get over is why everyone uses Instagram, which makes your photos look just as horrible as old Polaroids.
