United Continental Discontinues Online Baggage Check Discount

Not a huge story, but I heard this week that United Continental will no longer grant a discount by checking your bags online and paying in advance. The first checked bag used to be $23 and the second bag $32; however, the new rules maintain the $25/$35 fees for the first and second respective checked bags no matter how you pay.

It looks like Delta still maintains a discount for booking online in advance, but I question how long this discount will last now that United Continental has made the switch.

For reference, the following is a list of other airline baggage fees as of the date of this post assuming non-elite status and baggage under 50 lbs.

Airline – 1st, 2nd, 3rd+ Baggage Fees
US Airways – $25, $35, $125
American Airlines – $25, $35, $100
Southwest Airlines – Free, Free, $50

American Airlines 30 Deals in 30 Days (Day 6)

Todays deal is another snoozefest and is simply meant for those with too many miles sitting in their account and absolutely no concern about frizolously spending them. The deal is via AAdvantage’s auction site, and is for a American Airlines “Behind the Scenes” Package with a current bid of 101,000 miles.

For a very good read on what not to spend your miles on see this post from View From the Wing.

American Airlines 30 Deals in 30 Days (Day 5)

Previous discussion here. Yesterday’s deal was to follow American Airlines via Twitter for a chance to win 30,000 miles. I did not bother writing about it because I am not a member of Twitter yet. This website may make me succumb to join someday.

Today’s deal is pretty straight forward, 30% off the purchase of miles. Before booking any trips via American Airlines or its affiliates, be sure to price out what it would cost to buy the amount of miles needed for the trip. There could be a possibility of getting the ticket cheaper with purchased miles. Make sure to factor in the $30 fee on top of the mileage cost when computing your rate of return.

If you purchased the maximum 40,000 miles through this promotion, the total cost would be $730, or $0.018/mile. It is up to you to determine if those 40,000 miles would be of better value based on your proposed itinerary.
