Update: Last call as we must remove our links for the 100,000 mile offer by tomorrow (July 17, at 5:00 PM EST).
The British Airways 100,000 mile bonus is back again for 2012, offering 50,000 Avios points after the first purchase, 25,000 miles after $10,000 spend in the first year, and another 25,000 miles after another $10,000 in spend within the first year. So 50,000 miles is pretty easy to obtain, but the remaining 50,000 miles is highly dependent on your annual spend, taking it away from other potential offers.
A couple quick things to note, which may make the British Airways card valuable to your family.
1) If used outside of the U.S., there are no foreign transaction fees.
2) Spend $30,000 on the card and receive a free companion pass valid for two years.
3) Earn 1.25 Avios points per $1 spent; 2.5 Avios points per $1 spent on British Airways purchases.
4) The $95 annual fee is not waived for the first year.
Everyone should also know that British Airways miles can be expensive to redeem for overseas travel due to expensive fuel surcharges to certain routes. The best routes for redemption without fuel surcharges are:
- Redeeming for flights on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines within North America
- Flights on American Airlines or LAN from the US to South America
- Flights departing from Brazil
While an easy 50,000 Avios miles might be great for our family, we are holding off on adding this one to our wallets. We want to start working on build miles to use for an Alaska trip in 2014, but I am not completely convinced this is the right card for us right now.
